Electrical Safety PPE Checklist for Electricians

3. Arc Flash & Burns 

Hazard: High-temperature electrical explosions can reach up to 35,000°F, causing severe burns. 

PPE: Flame-resistant (FR) clothing, arc flash suits, face shields, balaclavas, and hoods provide layered protection from heat, fire, and flying debris. 

 

How to Choose the Right PPE for Electrical Safety 

Selecting the appropriate PPE starts with a thorough hazard assessment. Electricians should evaluate: 

  • Voltage levels involved in the task
  • Proximity to energized components
  • Environmental conditions (such as moisture or confined space) 

Once risks are identified, PPE should be selected to meet both OSHA and NFPA 70E standards. Familiarity with donning (putting on), doffing (removal), proper care, and regular inspection is critical to ensure the gear performs as intended. 

Tip: Always check labels for voltage ratings and flame-resistance levels, and replace PPE at the first sign of wear, damage, or expired certifications.
