6 Manufacturing KPIs Used to Improve Productivity

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are essential for tracking the performance, productivity, and overall health of a manufacturing operation. At Stoneway Electric Supply, we understand that successful manufacturers rely on timely, data-driven insights to stay competitive — and productivity-focused KPIs are at the heart of it all.

There are dozens of manufacturing KPIs out there, but focusing on the right ones can help you uncover bottlenecks, streamline operations, and boost output without overextending resources. Below, we’ll explore six key KPIs that provide measurable value in nearly any manufacturing environment.

What Are Manufacturing KPIs?

Manufacturing KPIs are quantifiable metrics used to evaluate production performance. From uptime to yield, these data points help manufacturers monitor productivity, reduce waste, and optimize resource allocation. When tracked and used effectively, KPIs drive informed decisions that reduce costs and elevate overall efficiency.

6 KPIs Every Manufacturer Should Track

1. Production Downtime

Formula: Sum of Total Downtime in a Specific Period

Downtime is one of the most costly aspects of manufacturing. Whether it’s planned or unplanned, each minute lost affects throughput and bottom-line results. In fact, industry-wide downtime losses add up to billions each year.

By actively tracking downtime — and recording causes — you can identify repeat issues, schedule maintenance more strategically, and resolve inefficiencies before they escalate.

2. Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)

Formula: Performance × Quality × Availability

OEE is a gold-standard KPI for understanding equipment productivity. It combines three key variables:

Performance: (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Count) ÷ Run Time

Quality: Good Count ÷ Total Count

Availability: (Planned Production Time – Stop Time) ÷ Planned Production Time

OEE offers visibility into whether your equipment is delivering optimal output. You can assess overall efficiency or isolate the weakest element—be it speed, output quality, or downtime.

3. Total Effective Equipment Performance (TEEP)

Formula: OEE × Utilization

TEEP builds on OEE by accounting for Utilization — or the percentage of total calendar time equipment is scheduled to run.

Utilization: Planned Production Time ÷ All Time

TEEP reveals how much more output you could achieve by increasing scheduled use without adding new equipment. In short, it helps identify your “hidden factory” — underused capacity waiting to be tapped.

4. Throughput

Formula: Units Produced ÷ Time

Throughput is a foundational metric that reflects production speed. You can measure it per machine, per line, or across your facility.

High throughput indicates efficiency, while sudden drops may point to bottlenecks or mechanical issues. Many plants track throughput in real time to optimize production flow, reduce touchpoints, and identify opportunities for automation.

5. First Pass Yield (FPY)

Formula: (Total Items Produced – Defective Items) ÷ Total Items Produced

Also known as First Time Through (FTT), FPY measures the percentage of products completed correctly on the first attempt — without rework.

FPY is a strong indicator of quality and process reliability. Monitoring it over time can reveal shifts in equipment health or process effectiveness and help catch problems before they impact customer satisfaction or profitability.

6. Revenue Per Employee

Formula: Total Revenue ÷ Total Number of Employees

This high-level metric gives insight into workforce productivity and overall operational efficiency. Used most by management, Revenue Per Employee can indicate whether you're scaling successfully or overextending labor.

Compare it to industry benchmarks or track it over time to evaluate growth and productivity trends.

Elevate Your Operations with Better KPIs

Tracking the right KPIs is a powerful way to enhance manufacturing productivity, reduce costs, and support long-term success. From equipment effectiveness to quality control, each of these six metrics offers insights that can shape smarter decisions across your operation.
